Desire vs Dream

desire

I have been told for a long time ago that Desire is the main source of all human suffering. All textbook, my moral spiritual teacher said that if you are insisting to keep this desire, you will suffer during the lifetime.

The logic is simple, when you desire something, there are only two options. You achieve it or not. If you don’t achieve this desire, it clearly will let you into deep sadness and frustration. Conversely, even you achieve it, you will have a hard time to hold  it and when they flee away, suffering come again. As the result, suddenly will become boring of the thing you have achieved and your brain continuously trying to find something else.

Take a very common example. When we were a kid, we are being told my our parents to study well, study harder, achieve top student performer in the class so we can get top university. In higher education, we even study harder to get good GPA and get prestigous job. After getting the job, we working harder to get promoted, higher salary or move other company. Some young brilliant also aspired to become entrepreneur, starting they own startup.

Another example is in a relationship. Why people can feel broken heart for days, months, even years ? I always look down to my friends who can’t forget their couple. Usually, my advice only about “you should forget it immoderately, find other activity”. Sometimes i resistant to give advice because i believe that they love is not really “love”. They only build beautiful memory when dating together as the couple and eventually when they separate, just matter of time to fully recover.

What i realized is the problem is not as simple as time recovery. It is a matter of how high our attachment. The easiest way to detect our mind of braind’s imagination about future of current activity. Take a example, enterpreneur imagine they company would gian huge success, a lot of money and he will very rich in the future. Couple in love always speak about their marriage, how they set up family, even how to raise their children. When you didn’t get all of the thing, that is the real pain come.

But, what about a dream ?

download

A lot of motivators said that we must have clear dream in order to success. CEO, successfull enterpreneur, richest man in the world suggested that we need to set highest goal, and try to move toward step by step to accompalish it. They motivate us, even you failed, never give up. Keep trying, fix your method, process, network, reiterate it and start over again and again.

I even set up my goal to get scholarship and study overseas , wrote it in the big piece of paper. Clearly, this condition is contrary different with what i have been taught about desire. If you ask a lot of people, they will give you different based on their background. Spiritual teacher will said that let go desire will let go off your suffering. Successfull businessman will insist that we must have clear dream in order to achieve same success.

So, are there any best option to accommodate both options ? Achieving success by let it go your desire…

22nd July

Today is networking day ! Yeah, i meet some new people here, all of them are in business school. Luckily, I have add their facebook account as a friend.

I list it started from yesterday, because that was my first foreign friend. They are Jiruntanin from Thailand and Mike from Mexico. Both of them are GSA associate.

Then today i meet great student from mozambique (very far away and she is alone !), Aspasia. Ricky (刘嘉轩) from china, Richard Wen from thailand, and finally Julie Nguyen a undergrad commerce student from local Australia.

Here is update diary of this day.

I join career consultation session, about 25 minutes, quick review about my resume. Some improvement suggestion was adding “Relevant Project” And “Career Profile” Section.

Also, my consultant reccoment me to talk further with Dr Tamm directly because he surely will give some useful insight. In addition, trying to connect with unsw alumni through linkedin to see what industry they are doing may help (i just remembered about career accelarator programme from business school)

Next Seminar is ace the interview, i feel a bit sleepy but i still get some point from the seminar

  • know the industry of your target company, not in the night but long before
  • Video interview tips, mostly about ligthing, sound, and other technical preparation
  • Interview question type, there are three type, standard open ended question, behavioral and situational question

Image below show some example and slides related to this explanation

O-Day

This is the first blog post about the uni. Actually, i am planning to write summary of every day uni, seminar, or course that i have followed at the end of the day.

I know that it can be daunting task, especially when a lot assignment comes, but hopefully i can accompalish this mission, mainly because writing summary is the best way to recap what i have learn throughout the day.

First day of O-Week is 20th July, i came late for official opening ceremony so the room was full. As the result, i need to follow the seminar outside the room and watching through televesion and loudspeaker. Bassically this seminar told about welcome message, about many thing you can do with uni , starting from club, career centre, and academic help.

Then, i explore around stall and club, the club i want, 180 consulting, unfortunately not opening stall. First, i queueing in Arc stall to get sticker and meet a woman  from ceko (great) who do undergraduate in art. She quite old i think, because she told me has 2 kid and has been in australia for 10 years, doing some charity organization for pregnant woman.

Weather is not friendly. It is rain all day and of course very cold. In the end, i go exploring around library and trying to lend book. It is self service, we just take the book of and using self service machine to scan our id barcode. Good news is each book can be borrowed up to 6 month. Bad news is if someone want to take you book, it can be easy recalled and you need to immidiatelly returning back the book.

Second day, I came late for my first seminar, about career and employment. I have read some presentation before from the website directly, but it will good just to summarize a couple of thing from here.

  • Prepare and elevator speech, practise it with friends or in the mirror (optional). One tips is speak it, write it, and speak it again. Record it may be better. Make it as natural as possible, because you are not answering interview question (Tell me about yourself), but basically started a conversation with real people
  • Make sure you get know well your employer
  • Ask permission to add linkedin or sending resume or ask business card.
  • If employer said it is ok to apply online, other possible approach may be, can i ask you as reccomender on the job application ?
  • Some common question (in the website listed)
  • 1. Where do graduate like to be failed?
  • 2.  What is the main project you are working at
  • 3. Why does organization stand out
  • 4. What is your daily routine
  • 5. What is strategic direction of your company
  • 6. What is the opportunity in career training
  • 7. Could you please explain the structure and rotation in more detail

Next Seminar is communication seminar, its about culture, how australian greeting each other. In this event i got two contact of my friend from brunei (Jordan)  and fillipino (Christine). Hope i can get in touch with them.

***

I finished my medibank setup account, and going to next seminar, studying business with mindfullness.

Basically, mindfullness is something i have learnt from kid, in the form of buddhist tradition and meditation, and its great to know that mindfullness is brought into all aspect of life, beyond the boundary of religion and it is universally accepted.

One new thing i learnt here was a fact that if we do multitasking, once we switch from one task to another, we need about 0.005 second (or 0.05 second ?) to get completely focussed again. So, hidden message is multitasking can be very wasting time without realizing it.

And also, the speaker promoting about PASS (peer assisted study session) and EDU (education development unit) to consult about assignment or any academic activity. The rest, go through the website and explore it.

Summarize of the activity in the point

  • Campus tour showed me student center for business school or student success team. Basically if you want to ask about enrollment, its the place to go there.
  • Education support team. find more in studentlifeandlearning.unsw.edu.au
  • UNSW job board in career unsw website
  • GSA (Graduate student association) busines school located in common room, quadrangle building

And, its dinner time. A lot of drinks (coke, wine, heineken, orange juice, mineral water) and a lot of food to.
